I won’t take back what I said about Amnesia being boring, well, because it really is most of the time (I have lots of not-so-good comments for Amnesia though I won’t be talking about those), but the ending was the best for an anime adapted from an otome game. La Corda d’Oro, take notes!!
You get to choose who the heroine will end up with!! How cool is that? ^_^= You can imagine just how happy I was to watch an ending like Amnesia’s! Living up to its label as an anime adapted from an otome game! ♥♥♥♥
And it’s a good thing that we get to see the heroine smile in the ending too. Plus, I really liked the ending credits showing the heroine with every bishie! Her face looks natural too – no passiveness; with personality!
Now for comments on each of the bishies…
Shin is cute – so much handsomeness – he is the most handsome of the bunch! (In my opinion anyway). I don’t like his personality though. Pretty pushy for my type, I guess (well, Ikki, and Toma are too…). And he calls you an ‘idiot’. Maybe it’s just teasing, but if I were the heroine I’ll stand up to him and tell him to stop with the ‘idiot’ teasing. Still, I kind of like him because he’s handsome. Oh, have I said that he’s handsome?
Ikki… is the bishie I don’t like among the five. He’s too popular with the girls that it definitely won’t be fun to be his girlfriend. I don’t have much comment on him because since the first time I saw him in the opening, I had already decided that I don’t like him. And then his fans club showed up in his arc saying that they have to share Ikki among themselves. I mean, really, girls? Ikki is now a club property?
Kento wasn’t my type at first glance, but when he started talking about nerdy things with his expressionless face, I grew to like him, with his calm and very reserved attitude. I liked his arc the second best (so cute!) but it’s just too bad that they decided to give Kento just one episode of exposure! Darn that. But anyway, he’s my best bet among the five (´∀｀)♥
Toma was my first bet at first glance. He’s protective too, and I think it will be nice to have him as a boyfriend. But then he became overprotective that it wasn’t nice to watch his arc anymore. I was like, “Gaah, Toma, what are you doing?? And you, heroine, how can you easily forgive him for doing all those to you??” And he’s a liar too. Oh Toma, you were my first favorite but then you disappointed me with your overprotectiveness. It was the very thing I liked best about you since the start of your arc, but then it became too much as your arc went on. Now I have Kento as my favorite instead of you…
Last but definitely not the least is Ukyo, the guy with a split personality. His arc, for me, is the best. I was actually surprised that this anime made me cry, all because of Ukyo’s arc. The heroine was again too gullible in this arc, but meh, where will our story be if she isn’t? My likeness for Ukyo isn’t the same as my likeness for Kento or Toma, but I like him because he love the heroine so much that he endured pain to let her live. No wonder it’s my favorite arc ^_^=
To sum up, what are the things I like about Amnesia? ✓ The opening song (I’ve said this before). ✓ The ending (La Corda really need to learn this from Amnesia). And… ✓ The bishounens (I mean, it’s got to be one of the primary reasons why you’re watching this series right? (*°∀°)♥) As for the things I don’t like about it… I have a lot but I won’t be going through them because I have a long list -_-
Well, I guess that settles my business with Amnesia (´▽｀)ノ
It’s… so… hot! (A side story)
If in my previous I was talking about Christmas and presents, now I’m complaining about the summer heat! I told myself last year that I’ll be posting at least once month, but look at me now – very surprised that it has been three months since my last post!
The first quarter of the year went by so fast; I still can’t imagine that all of this semester’s exams were given in three months! Summer vacation will still have to wait though; I’m still not finished with the semester. I still have a couple of exams to take next week! (and a synthesis paper to pass too!). But it looks like summer is so impatient in showing off its hotness *pun intended ^_^*. I will need to hit the beach once this semester is over!
As for my summer plans… (as if I have summer vacation (T＿T) )
Well, I don’t care if I have summer classes (Hello Bio115: Taxonomy of Higher Plants!), as long as I have two weeks of summer vacation part 1 and a few days for part 2! ^_^■
Amnesia: won’t you tell me my name?
Already planned for summer vacation part 1 is watching Amnesia. But since I was being a bad student last week, I watched the first two episodes of Amnesia even though I still have an exam the following day! Now I present my first impressions for Amnesia…
Amnesia is an anime adaptation of the otome game of the same title. Basically it is a reverse harem anime with lots of bishounen to fantasize about
♡＾▽＾♡. I can’t help but compare it with La Corda d’Oro, also an anime adaptation of an otome game. Though, with watching the first two episodes of Amnesia, I have to say that La Corda d’Oro is still way better (La Corda is actually one of my favorites!)
The first two episodes of the Amnesia bored me out (。￣□￣)ﾂ. The heroine reminded me of Princess Sakura of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, a frail girl who had lost her memories. And since she has amnesia (oh boy was I wondering where the title came from…), the heroine (who has no name, and thus called “The Heroine”) is so passive and has no personality at all. But who am I to complain? This is an adaptation of an otome game, where you play as the heroine, you control the heroine, and you yourself decide the heroine’s personality. Perhaps it will totally kill the otome game idea if they had given the heroine some personality of her own.
But then again, Kahoko Hino of La Corda d’Oro has her own personality in the anime and manga, albeit still retaining some “otome-game-heroine-passiveness”. It was a really nice transition from the otome game to the manga story. But I guess I can do nothing to Amnesia’s heroine except to hope that that she will have her own cool personality in the next episodes, like how Princess Sakura became a butt-kicking-yet-still-princess-y girl. When the heroine gains her memories, at the least. Or during flashbacks, depending on how the anime will go.
The Heroine also has a little friend that only she can see. And it turned out that this friend, Orion is the name by the way, was the cause of her amnesia! Hello, Lili of La Corda d’Oro! *wink*
Now we move on to the highlight of the anime – the bishies! It’s one of the wonders of otome and reverse harem: lots of good-looking guys each with their own unique or stereotyped personality – and you get to pick one of them! Though I hoped that they should have given some of their personality to the heroine.
Let me predict one thing before I proceed to watching the rest of the episodes: Each episode will highlight the story of one of the bishies with the heroine. And with each episode there will be ‘toki-doki’ moments between the two. Ah, otome, you’re very unpredictable.
But overall, for the sake of first impressions, the thing that I like best about Amnesia is the opening. It was the very thing that drove me to watch the anime after all! I kept on playing Nagi Yanagi’s “Zoetrope” ever since I watched the opening. My favorite part in the video is the “kiss” part （○゜ε＾○）.
Now off to prepare for next week’s exams – and then I’ll watch the rest of Amnesia’s episodes!
Every year, it is always a difficult task to think about the gifts to give for family and friends for Christmas. Though there is the 80% assurance that the present you will give will make the recipient happy, let’s face it, there will always be a 20% chance that the person will not like the gift. There’s the chance that another person had already given that gift to the recipient, or that the recipient already has an item similar to your gift, or that the recipient doesn’t like the gift AT ALL.
Sigh. That’s why there’s a saying “It’s the thought that counts!” It takes two months to think about and complete your Christmas gift list, and then you’ll have to spend one or two of your day off weekends to do gift shopping. And you’ll do the gift wrapping too to save money and avoid the long que ofthe gift wrapping section of the department store. The hassle of giving gifts – but it’s for people important to us, so still, LET’S GO FIGHT!
Anyway, enough of the drama and back to Christmas gift lists… Creating a Christmas gift list is still pretty fun to do, right? (Yeah, there’s always the pressure “what if they don’t like the gift” and etc., but nah, “It’s the effort that counts!”) So for this year’s special Christmas feature, I had fun doing this reeeeeeaaaaally short list of “Gifts that I’ll give to five lucky manga characters!” (I’m saying lucky because that means that their names immediately popped to my head when I was thinking of what to write for this post )
For Hotaru Imai (Gakuen Alice): Seven dinner tickets to an Eat-all-you-can Seafood Restaurant (so it will be good for a week’s worth of dinner!)
Because Hotaru loves eating, seafood, and free things. She will definitely love the food: crab, shrimp, octopus – yum yum yum!! I love seafood too so I’ll surely go with her (´∀`)
For Tomoyo Daidouji (Cardcaptor Sakura): Homemade Christmas cookies – in a cute container tied with a ribbon – plus the ribbon can be used as a hair accessory! (i.e. headband)
It was difficult to think of a gift for her (;-_-)ノI think she has everything already, being a girl living in a mansion… But despite this fact I know that whatever I give her, she’ll be very glad to accept it; she’s such a nice girl! So I guess something I especially made myself will be most appreciated – that’s why I’ll be baking Christmas cookies for Tomoyo! Maybe I will double the ingredients so I can give Christmas cookies to Sakura too! And both of them will look really cute with the ribbon hair accessory（＾_＾）
For Conan Edogawa (Detective Conan): DVD of the Sherlock Holmes movie (2009) and its sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) [both starring Robert Downey Jr.]
To be honest, Conan is the character that I found easiest to give a gift for. I was actually telling myself, “Anything that has ‘mystery’ or ‘detective’ in it will do for that Detective Otaku!” That is when I remembered watching the Sherlock Holmes movie, which I enjoyed. And no more headaches for me; I’ll be giving Conan original DVD copies of the two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr.
For Machi Kuragi (Fruits Basket): Any Mogeta item
This is considering that can visit the Furuba universe and I can buy any Mogeta item from that place. Why Mogeta for Machi? Because she loves Mogeta. Need I say more?
For Tsubasa Uehara (Arisa): Cute and girly hair accessories
Well, Tsubasa really wants to be cute and girly (when she is already cute!) so I think cute hair accessories that will match her blond-dyed hair will be a good Christmas gift for her (^_^)
Merry Christmas again everyone! Cheers!
It’s the time of the year again! And to start the holiday season, I’m posting my wishlist for this year’s Christmas (＾▽＾)
I noticed that my last Christmas’ wishlist was full of manga and artbooks. In one year, I got about 2/5 of the items in the list, and I think it isn’t bad since I got them myself (⌒_⌒;) (because no one was kind of enough to give me the manga I want (´＿｀。) ). Anyway… Moving on, this year’s wishlist isn’t all manga, but you may notice there’s a bunch of Detective Conan in it… all because I’m reading Detective Conan manga this Christmas break. (ehehehe (￣┏∞┓￣))
1. iPad Smart Cover – Polyurethane (Pink)
I bought an iPad last month, and currently I’m using a case with a cute girl-wearing-eyeglasses design. But I noticed that with that case I’m using, the sides get scratched when it’s in my bag, so I think a case from Apple itself will be better for my iPad (*^^*) . A smart cover in pink is very much appreciated (＾▽＾). Available at the Apple Store.
2. Detective Conan Complete Color Works
Ah, the artbook that every Detective Conan die-hard fan must have. I think this book is currently very hard to find, though there are still some available at Amazon.com but are sold at a very high price. Will I be able to save up for this? (But I know someone out there will give a copy to me as a gift （○゜ε＾○）)
3. Detective Conan Nendoroid Petite Figure
The figure I’ve been wanting since it’s announcement! These limited edition Conan Nendoroid petite figures were released to commemorate this year’s Detective Conan movie: The 11th Striker. There were two variants released, a Tokyo Spirits version and a Big Osaka version. I don’t know how I’ll be able to obtain a Big Osaka version since it’s exclusively available in Japanese 7-11 stores, but the The Tokyo Spirits version is easier to obtain; it comes with the limited edition Meitantei Conan volume 75 manga, and it’s still available at some Japanese online shops.
Of course, my wishlist cannot be complete without this! Case Closed, Arisa, Fruits Basket, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic, any CLAMP manga… as long as I still don’t have that volume I’ll be glad to accept the gift (＾_＾)

This was a post I started 04/08/2012, and the title was supposed to be “Back to my first love: Detective Conan episodes 266-280″, but I never finished writing up to episode 280 (or I was just too lazy to finish it back then). After eight months, I found it again in my drafts folder, and lo and behold, even though it is marked unfinished, I can actually publish it, only that instead of episodes 266-280, it spans only episodes 266-273 of the anime. And, I felt that my efforts to write this eight months ago will only be wasted if I delete this…
So I’m currently watching Detective Conan episodes that I still haven’t watched…
Detective Conan is the very first anime that “drove me crazy.” I was so addicted to it before; it was the only anime I’m watching and I’m interested in watching… Yeah I was head over heels regarding Detective Conan during my sophomore and junior high school years. *reminiscing the past*
Also, I started this blog because of Detective Conan… Some might have noticed that my first few posts were all about Detective Conan.
Okay I guess that’s it for the intro… Well anyway, last week, I started watching with episode 266, titled “The truth behind the Valentine’s (The Murder).” The case covers three episodes, with a major development on Sonoko and Makoto’s relationship on “The Resolution Part.”
The chocolate Sonoko made was really cute, complete with a bandage that matches Makoto ^_^
(As a shoujo fan girl watching a shounen title of course I went “kyaaaaaa!” while I was watching this scene ^_^= … but where does being a shoujo fan girl follow anyway??)
There was also a part with Shinichi Conan and Ran, but I don’t think it’s as big as the development between Sonoko and Makoto so I won’t be elaborating that scene. But it was still something to go “kyaaa!~” for ♥~
Oh by the way, we get to see Ran and Makoto’s karate in this case too, so it’s really worth checking out
The next case, “The forgotten momento from the crime” (episodes 269-270) got me impressed with the clever murder trick. It involved a remote control which directed two machines.
And then these things…
… will fall to the victim’s head
Takagi-keiji and Megure-keibu’s initial deduction (the recording stuff) was also what I was thinking, but *sigh* Conan proved us wrong. But anyway, there was a bit of the recording thing so I wasn’t all wrong. Yay!
We often see this pose, don’t we?
The episode also hinted something about Black Organization doing, with what Takagi-keiji told Conan. It was that the case reports of incidences which Kogoro solved were stolen from the headquarters, but the thief was nice enough to return them… Hm, is it really a doing of the Black Organization?
The next case, “The secret rushed omission” which covered episodes 271 and 272 proved that in the whole of Detective Conan, there was a murder victim that did not bother to think of a code as a dying message (heck, you’ll die in minutes so of course you have to write the name of your killer, fast!). Instead, he wrote the NAME, yes you read that write, the WHOLE NAME of the murderer.
But if course, this is Detective Conan so don’t expect the case to be easy…
So this is the dying message?? Hmmmm… but I have seen those symbols somewhere, to be honest I was holding it just a while ago…
Oh, Jodie-sensei had thought what I was thinking. Games!!!
Oh wait, Jodie-sensei?? Is that really her? I mean, what’s with her accent?? Not that I can speak/understand/read/write Japanese though, there is just something wrong with her accent… it’s not Kansai-ben either; I know Kero-chan very well, thank you. It’s like she’s forcing her accent… Well I know she’s American, but she was speaking in good Japanese during the Clash of the Red and Black arc! Oh but then Clash of the Red and Black arc happened waaaaay after this case so maybe… Arggggh. Oh well. Enough pretending that I don’t know. It’s so annoying when you watch the later episodes first because you already know that the Jodie-sensei we see here is just Vermouth disguising.
Well anyway, they were able to close the case when the name of the culprit finally appeared. But if they had immediately found out that the shredder is a good way to dispose of evidences, then Conan’s deductions won’t be needed…
Ooooh so that’s how it was…
Next case was “Quiz Baa-san’s disappearance”. I think it’s just some filler case, so nothing that can affect the story happened. But I think the puzzles were really cool… if only I can understand them… They are in Japanese:
Hmmmm… Come up with the character “ta” using only four matchsticks?
(With my veery little knowledge in Japanese, I was lucky that I know this “ta” character because it does look like a field, like its meaning, so no problems in understanding this riddle)
Tadaa! I never realized you can solve it that way!
Anyway, the real case started when Quiz Baa-san was kidnapped… Here, she left a clue:
“Hi” character written eight times?
(I had no problem with this kanji too because it’s easy to remember. It’s also often used [i.e. writing a date] so I always encounter it)
And with further deductions the Detective Boys came up with…
Now I’m nosebleeding… Conan began to say too many Kanji characters O_O Even the translation notes didn’t help me O_O I feel you, Genta-kun O_O
I guess that’s it for episodes 266-273. I haven’t watched any Detective Conan episodes lately so I don’t think I’ll be able to write another one like this soon…
Tags: Kyou Koi Wo Hajimemasu
I have mentioned before that I’m not a fan of shoujo manga titles whose plot revolve only romance (and I call myself a shoujo fan. Really, Alyssa?). While the first chapter of Kyou, Koi Wo Hajimemasu (“Today, We Start Our Love”) reads clearly that the story will be all about the romance between the heroine and the leading guy, I decided to still give the manga a try because I was quickly attached to the studious heroine.
Old-fashioned “Showa girl” Hibino Tsubaki was accepted only to her back-up high school of choice, but nevertheless her determination to be the top of her batch in order for her to get a good recommendation for acceptance to a good university is admirable. Of course, it only follows that there’s an obstacle on her way – in the form Kyouta Tsubaki, who effortlessly became the highest scorer during the entrance exam and every succeeding exams, despite looking like a long-haired delinquent who will never do anything good. Like the typical plot, we see Kyouta bullying Hibino in front of the class, only to end up having his hair cut by her. But as aggressive as ever, like most guys who bully the heroine during the first few chapters (ehem, Gakuen Alice, Hana Yori Dango), Kyouta took one of Hibino’s first: her first kiss. That started the love-hate relationship which developed into girlfriend-boyfriend relationship later in the series.
What can I say? A lot. And pardon the upcoming rants. (My views only, please don’t start a comment war )
First of all, I have mentioned that it was the heroine Hibino Tsubaki who urged me to read more of the series. At first, I thought she is very well determined to get the top spot, but as I read more, I realized it wasn’t her determination at all; it was actually because of her parent’s pressure on her. She is so half-hearted in reaching her goal. And with that I quickly lost my admiration towards her, along with my patience to read the manga.
But if determination (which turned out to be fake) was the first thing I liked about the heroine, being too trying-hard was the first thing I least liked about her. In chapter 1, Hibino tried to make herself look cute for her first day of high school, only to end up saying it doesn’t suit her (number two I least like about the heroine: lack of self-confidence) and going again with her old-fashioned style. And in another chapter, she tried to get a make-over to be more confident in front of Kyouta – oh really, she’s trying too hard to be cute when she’s already cute! Take notes, Hibino: “Confidence is the key!” and “Be yourself!”
And I just can’t help but notice it, really, Hibino hides a lot from her mother? Definitely not a good role model. She already has a boyfriend whom she already makes out with and her mother has absolutely no idea about it – now, that is one good reason to finally drop this manga. I could accept it if the mom knows even only the girlfriend-boyfriend thing, but noooo, Hibino tries to hide everything away from her mother so as much as to lie to her. It makes me think if this manga is actually a ‘beware manga’ for teenage misdemeanours.
If as the story progressed I started to dislike Hibino, ever since the beginning of the manga I already hate her leading guy Kyouta Tsubaki. He is so aggressive, he is a playboy, he has issues; I can’t see why girls like that delinquent guy when the only good thing about him is his school grades. I usually hate bad boys in manga in the beginning of the story (I told you, I have more affinity with the good guys), but as the story progressed I slowly develop soft spots for them (again, Gakuen Alice’s Natsume Hyuuga and Hana Yori Dango’s Tsukasa Domyoji). That is so not the case with Kyouta Tsubaki; it’s already the 34th chapter, he and Hibino had already overcome a number of obstacles, and yet he never changed; he’s still as aggressive as ever, and I can’t understand how Hibino can tolerate a boyfriend like him. I just hate bastards like him.
I have more rants about this manga, which includes Hibino’s sister Sakura who is also one trying-hard (though I like Hibino and Sakura’s sister-sister relationship), and the ‘too many already’ obstacles for love between Hibino and Kyouta (really, I think this manga is already too long; much like Hana Yori Dango but at least I like the characters in Hana Yori Dango), but I won’t be telling more about those, I have ranted enough already, thank you.
One more thing: I’m not a big fan of Kyou, Koi Wo Hajimemasu’s art either; Kyouta isn’t even handsome (again, why do the girls like that delinquent??), and the only character design I like is Sakura’s.
I don’t know if the things I don’t like about the manga will change in the later chapters, but I’ve had enough by chapter 34 and I won’t give Kyou, Koi Wo Hajimemasu a second chance.
Tags: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
A couple more exams and this semester will finally be over, but we can’t take to wait for another week until we watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower!
The movie was already in theatres September 26 (today is October 6), but as usual, with my excuse of exams and laboratory reports, it was only today that my friends and I had the time to watch it. Next exams will be this coming Thursday and Friday, so what’s the most fun thing to do during the weekend? (Except from studying of course!) Watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower!!
I have to admit that I have yet read the book, though I have already read some reviews, after I first heard that Logan Lerman will be playing the lead role. I mean, it’s Logan Lerman, my only Hollywood crush! (Percy Jackson FTW!) I was also looking forward to Emma Watson (as Sam), and Ezra Miller (as Patrick) in the cast, both of whom, like Logan Lerman who had played as Percy Jackson, had played characters from books! Hermione of the Harry Potter series and Kevin from We Need to Talk About Kevin! But enough of the fangirling now.
All in all I really enjoyed the movie; no boring parts, the Patrick-makes-everyone-laugh scenes were so much fun, and the casting was great (for me anyway XD). Only con is that I felt that I’m missing a lot of the story, I think there are so many parts that weren’t included; but since this a movie adaptation of a book, I say missing certain key points is a given. Perhaps I’ll read the book sometime during the semestral break, so I’ll understand the story better.
*And one more thing: I realized I only watch movies in cinemas once a year! The only movie I watched in cinema last year was Harry Potter 7.2; The Perks of Being a Wallflower is actually my first this year! (I’m not including the 14th Movie of Detective Conan because it’s anime and I paid nothing for that movie XD). So what will be the lucky movie for next year? Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monster, perhaps?
