La Corda d’Oro volume 14: School festivals are so much fun!

la corda d'oro volume 14I’m not exactly a fan of shoujo manga series that focuses only on romance, but La Corda d’Oro is one exemption to that preference. Up to now, I’m not sure why I really love this manga. I have been thinking what made me attracted to this manga that I listed it under my ‘minor favorites’. I’m not a fan of Hino Kahoko, the heroine. So maybe it’s because the story has many bishounens you can fangirl about (READ: Kazuki Hihara). Or perhaps I just find it cool that the heroine has so many guys wooing her. But oh well, I guess I’ll just go straight to the review of my most favorite volume (so far)…

Even before volume 14 was released last year, I have already told myself that I am so going have this volume because it has Kazuki Hihara on the cover (how much do I love Kazuki? read here). Although Kazuki looks out of character in the cover (which, the manga-ka, Yuki Kure, herself mentioned in the book), I find it as a cool break from his always smiling face. I’m definitely not a Kazuki-Kaho shipper, but IT HAS KAZUKI HIHARA ON THE COVER so I won’t complain.

[INCOMING SPOILERS!]

Volume 14 was all about the two most awaited and fun school festivals: Sports Festival and Cultural Festival (I love these events too when I was in high school ^_^ A break from all the Keiichi sports fest la corda 14studying! Fun time with friends! Oh yeah!). I know, I know, ‘school festival’ arc is already a cliche of school drama manga series, but more often than not, school festival arcs are my favorites. I’m glad that La Corda d’Oro didn’t fail me; most of the ‘must haves’ of school festivals were included.

The volume started with Measure 59, the sports festival chapter. The first part was all sports fest comedy: Kahoko cheering Aoi, boosting his will and energy, Kahoko’s stone throwing fight with an Azuma Yunoki fangirl (forgot her name…), and the most humorous in the chapter, Keiichi doing really good in the chicken fight (hahaha! made me laugh hard! I mean, Keiichi? Doing good in the sports festival? Surprising…).

Kahoko Ryotaro volume 14The chapter progressed from comedy to romance when the accidentally injured Kahoko visited the clinic. Well, call it fate, or coincidence or whatever because the nurse was out, and there in the clinic was Ryotaro. Ryotaro, of course, being a gentleman, tended Kahoko’s injury much to her shyness. I find that scene too cheesy but nevertheless it provided a stage of attention to Ryotaro. He was able to hint that he wants to tell ‘something’ to Kahoko, but he decided that it can wait until after the music contest (the contest that the two of them are joining).

kazuki aoi ryotaro la cordaImmediately after Measure 59 is the Sports festival special edition, with trumpet major Kazuki Hihara on the spot light (oh yeah!). I don’t really want to comment about this special chapter; my words are definitely going to be too biased because it was full of Kazuki Hihara. But anyway, it was fun to see Kazuki, Ryotaro, and Aoi to be getting along so well, despite the fact that each of them are very aware of each other’s feelings for Kahoko. I think it is better that rivals in love are friendly towards each other.

Nothing big happened in Measure 60, though I think I can consider the confrontation talk between Ryotaro and Len as something major. That dialogue made me look at the worse side of Len… I didn’t really find it cute that Len asked Ryotaro what he loves about Kahoko, as if it was nothing. Len is too dense for a male character; I can’t believe that he has the slightest of idea of Ryotaro’s feelings for Kahoko. And I won’t take his ‘too focused in music’ excuse — it isn’t enough for be a rich boy to be ignorant of others’ feelings.

la corda volume 14 impromptuMoving on… Measure 61 marks the start of the school festival (/cultural festival). I think it’s the ‘Aoi Chapter’ in volume 14. Kahoko had forced Aoi to play Romeo and Juliet on the viola. What’s more, she asked her to lead them (music competition students) in playing the piece on front of the study body. Well, what do you expect; Of course, the music competition students (READ: Kazuki Hihara) were surprised after knowing that General Education student Aoi Kaji knows how to play an instrument, so they insisted him. They played Romeo and Juliet, but ended with terrible results, as it was only an impromptu show. But nevertheless, I find it very true that even the music students, with the exception of Keiichi and Yunoki, make major mistakes during impromptu presentations (the looks on their faces were really funny when they made the mistakes :) )

la corda volume 14 aoi kajiAfter the failure presentation, as Kahoko, Aoi, and Ryotaro have decided to get snacks, the after-school-festival-dance topic came up. Ryotaro said he can’t dance so he isn’t going. Kahoko said she had completely forgotten the dance event, and she doesn’t have a date (like her last year). And so, Aoi, very straightforward as always, asked Kahoko to go with him to the dance (despite the fact that, as Ryotaro mentioned in his mind, half the female population of the school asked Aoi to the dance). With his sweet tongue saying, “It’s my first school festival in Seisou… I want to make it a night to remember,” Kahoko accepted. I felt that the ‘un-romantic’ Ryotaro was thinking “I should have asked her to the date beforehand!”, but he’s too slow (and I think he has no intention of inviting Kahoko, anyway). Well, way to go, Aoi; that’s what you get when you are straightforward and aren’t afraid of being ashamed in front of a girl. Ryotaro, take notes.

There was another special chapter after measure 61, which was all about the individual class’ booths during the school festival. The booths were introduced when Kahoko, Len, Ryotaro, and Aoi, went to check out the festival. I see this special chapter as a comic relief break; take the Butler Cafe (Kazuki and Azuma as butlers) and the Horror House (with Keiichi as a ghost) and you’ll know what I mean :) .

la corda measure 62 groupThe last chapter of volume 14, Measure 62, is all about the last events of Seisou Academy’s school festival: the concert and the dance. The contestants of the music competition played a piece together in the concert. Though Kahoko was very nervous, she did her best because it might be the last that they [music competition contestants] will be playing together. Len had a solo performance; he played Scherzo Tarantella, the piece he wasn’t able to play during the second selection. It was expected of Len, performing a piece that is hard play. But his second piece surprised the students and the teachers (and I know will be surprised too if I were a Seisou len tsukimori violin volue 14student watching the concert), because he played Ave Maria, which was a piece that isn’t as flashy and fast-paced as his previous performances. Many noted that there was something different in Len when he was playing Ave Maria. I guess even I was moved by his performance (though it is manga, no actual music you can hear), because Ave Maria was the piece Kahoko played during the fourth selection of the music contest; meaning he is finally realizing his feelings for Kahoko, bit by bit… Well, to summarize, I developed a soft spot for Len, thanks to that performance. (And he looks so handsome while he was playing :) )

kazuki and kahoko dance volume 14After the concert was the dance party. It was another comedy break, as the boys take turns to dance with Kahoko. Keiichi, expressionless as usual, took Kahoko’s hands right after the announcement of the start of the dance, but of course, Aoi as Kahoko’s date, immediately took Kahoko away from the dumbfounded Keiichi. But just as Aoi and Kahoko were getting used with the dancing, a blushing Kazuki Hihara came and asked Kahoko to dance with him. Aoi was like, “You can’t butt in on us, Kazuki!!” Oh well. (But I really want to smack Ryotaro in the face for not wanting to dance with Kahoko. Oh come on, Ryotaro! Show some romantic side!)

kahoko azuma volume 14 kissThe dancing didn’t end with the dance party, as Kahoko who was supposed to be practicing, met Azuma in the rooftop. I guess it is Azuma’s stage in volume 14; it turned out that he was Kahoko’s last dance (well, I know that this isn’t a prom night but never mind). He even gave Kahoko a little kiss on the forehead, which enraged (I don’t know if ‘enrage’ is the right term…) her a bit.

Volume 14 ended with Kahoko and Azuma’s dance. It’s not much of cliff hanger, but of course, a reader will want to know what will happen next, right?

(Oh I forgot, there was also a Special Chapter after Measure 62. But it was only about Kanazawa and Kira’s high school days so I’m not writing about it)

To summarize, nothing major really happened in volume 14; but it was  fun to read because of the fun high school events associated with comedy scenes. But the greatest thing in the fourteenth volume is that the boys get to have their own respective spot lights.

I’ll have my summary/review of La Corda d’Oro Volume 15 next ^_^

Furuba favorite: The Super Student Council!

Ah, just some other lazy vacation day… I spent the day swimming (hehe :) ) and re-reading Fruits Basket manga chapters that have the Student Council as the main cast :3

FruitsBasket_StudentCouncil

(I love this splash page featuring the members of the student council ^_^)

[SPOILERS AHEAD!]

The student council of Furuba houses most all of my favorite characters in the series. Yuki, Kakeru, Machi, Kimi, and Nao… I just love their group! Each of them has their own unique personality ^_^ . They always make me laugh! Well, although each of the 12 Zodiacs also have different personalities, I still prefer the student council for many reasons… Well, Yuki is my most favorite character in the series so it just follows that I will love his friends :)

I have to thank the former student council president for creating this crazy group. Haha :) If not because of him, I wouldn’t have something to look forward to in reading Furuba… haha, honestly, I read Furuba mostly because of the student council.

Anyway, this is just another biased post with the description of the student council members and how I like them <3

First off, my most favorite male character ever since I saw him in volume 1, Yuki Sohma, the student council president. Oh gosh I love him! I already posted something about my love for him here ^_^

Yuki kakeru first meeting

Yuki’s reaction when he first saw his soon-to-be student council comrades was epic! Hahaha! There’s the disordered SC room, with Machi as the cause if it. And then Machi woke up a sleeping Kakeru… The look on Yuki’s face! (LoL!) Tsk tsk, Kakeru, sleeping on your duties?

Although I have to admit that working with crazy people is a real hassle, finding friendship and love in the student council is just the best, right, Yuki?

machi angryNext is Yuki’s leading lady and my most favorite female character, Machi Kuragi, the student council treasurer. I guess there’s no need to explain why my most favorite couple in Furuba is Yuki-Machi :) . I just love those two!

Sure, Machi might be the goddess of disorder, but that’s what makes her Machi. She was noticed by Yuki because of that! She’s also very funny when she’s angry(or just shy). Haha ^_^ And her reaction when Kakeru teases her! Remember the incident when Yuki and Kakeru visited her apartment? Or that time with this ‘favorite color is red’ thing. LoL!

The moment when Machi finally realized that she’s developing special feelings for Yuki was cute too ^_^ . And the Yuki-Machi scenes that follows. I love seeing Machi shy when there’s Yuki involved :) Also, her character development, to be honest, is my most favorite in Furuba.

Yuki Machi Mogeta

Anyway, I love this scene wherein Yuki gave her a Mogeta :) Machi’s face!

Next student council member is Kakeru Manabe, the student council vice president and Yuki’s bestfriend. And evil comrade. Haha ^_^

Naughty KakeruI like how Kakeru became Yuki’s confidante. It was a good thing that Yuki was able to tell his secrets to someone, which is Kakeru. He’s a smart guy who knows what’s going on around him, and he knows how to deal with different situations. And he isn’t afraid of what he’s saying; he’s a tactless guy in a good way :) Calling Yuki as ‘princess’, ‘girl’, ‘my daughter’ or whatever… hahaha he’s just funny :3

He’s also a good older brother to Machi. They may only be half-siblings but he takes care of her. Sure, he does tease Machi a lot (hahaha! the apartment incident!), but I think that kind of attention helped Machi ^_^

Also, think Kimi-Kakeru makes a good tandem (partners in crime!), but it turned out that Kakeru already has a girlfriend. Not that I’m complaining though, I think Komaki is just right for Kakeru. (But really, I love Kimi and Kakeru’s combined antics! :) )

pretty Kimi TodoSince I have mentioned Kimi, let’s go to one of the student council secretaries. Kimi Todo, with her striking (and annoying for many) personality which I really like,  is the prettiest among the girl characters in Fruits Basket… for me anyway. But who would oppose that anyway? She’s a real beauty!… Which makes her a good manipulator. Haha ^_^

I’m actually impressed at how good she is in annoying other girls. Especially the members of the Prince Yuki fan club :D . She pissed off the Yuki’s fangirls in her first appearance in the manga! No wonder the Yuki’s fangirls hate her that much. LoL ^_^

Kimi Todo give me thisKimi acts oh-so-innocent when she’s actually trying to get her way. Like Kakeru, she’s also a tactless person, but she says her opinions innocently. She also loves to act cute (but you’re cute already Kimi!), and it’s easy to notice when she addresses herself in third person.

Hmmmm I wonder when will this ‘bad’ personality of her change? Though I don’t want it to change because it adds comic relief in the series :) But really, her personality will be really annoying in the real world :D … Anyway, I actually like it when she’s acting cute :3 Calling Yuki “Yun-yun” ^_^ (well it was actually Kakeru who coined “Yun-yun” but it’s cuter when Kimi says it :3 )

Naohito Sakuragi Chibi-sukeMoving on… Last but not the least (well, he is indeed the least when it comes to height…) is Naohito Sakuragi, also a secretary of the student council. He’s the short-tempered guy you don’t want to mess with… but maybe not really because he’s cute when he’s angry :3 . But he’s always angry anyway! Poor Nao, Natsuki Takaya never drew him smiling…

Nao, or Chibi-suke, as how Kakeru calls him because of his height, tried to make himself look like a person ‘full of dignity’ during his first appearance. He called Yuki his “Riva–” (he’s trying to say “rival”), only to be cut off by Kakeru, saying “lover” instead. Haha! He never really had a chance against Kakeru, even during his first appearance :)

Well anyway, he’s a short guy who only thinks about student council work. He doesn’t like to slack off, and he wants the other members of the student council to do the same. He’s constantly shouting, telling the partners in crime Kimi and Kakeru, “do your work!” He’s an absolute no-nonsense guy… but it turned out that he has a crush on the president of the Prince Yuki fans club, Motoko! I have to praise Kimi for her good deductions on that! Hmmmm so that’s why he called Yuki his rival… Well anyway, the scene between him and Motoko was really cute ^_^

Oh by the way, don’t ever call him short even though he really is short. Hahaha :)

Furuba Student_Council

Well, I guess that wraps this post up. Furuba Student Council FTW! ^_^

Hearts Day and short manga reviews

A happy hearts’ day to everyone!!

Anime+Studying

It’s been a long while since my last post… sigh I know, the previous was added the last day of 2011. I wasn’t even able to greet everyone a Happy Chinese New Year (it’s Hatori’s year, year of the dragon, if you read Fruits Basket manga). Been very busy that I don’t even know when to have a real break…. But the semester is still far from over, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to post something for the rest February. I guess I’ll be posting next during March. Arrrrggggghhhh. I can’t wait for summer vacation. But I’m required to summer classes so yeah. I have only about two weeks of real vacation.

And this post is only a very short update on what’s been happening with me since 2012 started. I don’t know when I’ll have a real post.

Portrait of M and N

PortraitOfMandNSince I have very little time to make my own synopsis of the story, here’s a copy-paste from Wikipedia:

Mitsuru is beautiful, graceful and admired by many people, but she has a weird problem—a single, violent movement against her can get her begging sweetly for more! Her nickname M, also stands for masochistic.

Natsuhiko, is a guy who found out Mitsuru’s secret on their first day of senior high school. Even so, he has an equally bad problem—the mere glimpse of his reflection can send him into a flying fit about how beautiful he is! He is nicknamed as N for narcissistic.

portraitof_m_and_nSo I just want to share that I’ve started reading Higuchi Tachibana’s ‘Portrait of M and N’. It’s a really good story with very pretty and unique characters. Mitsuru is very pretty and Natsuhiko is soooo handsome, I really like him! Nastuhiko cares for Mitsuru much; it’s just so sweet…

Bad thing is, the scanlations available are only up to volume 2. Plus the Tokyopop release is only up to volume 5 (I think). So I won’t be able to read the last volume, that’s chapter 6, not unless I learn to read Japanese. It’s just tooooo bad.

A longer review will be posted once I get my real vacation  :) . Because I just love this manga I’ll make a review of it ^_^

Alice 19th

Alice19thAnother copy-paste from Wikipedia:

The story follows Alice Seno, a fifteen-year-old girl forever in the shadow of her older sister Mayura, who achieves in everything she undertakes. At her school Alice becomes known as “Mayura’s little sister”. Older girls, judging Alice too meek to retaliate, torment her relentlessly.

Alice harbors a deep affection for Kyô Wakamiya, a handsome upperclassman and a member – with Mayura – of the school archery team. On the way to school one day, Alice rescues a white rabbit from the road despite the danger to herself, but she is rescued by Kyô and receives from the rabbit a bracelet with a single red stone. The rabbit she saves, however, is no ordinary rabbit. The rabbit reveals her true form to Alice and introduces herself as Nyozeka. Alice is told that she is destined to become a Lotis Master. The Lotis Masters use the power of words and communication to enter the Inner Heart of others. It is a powerful ability to be used carefully as Alice soon finds out.

Using the power of the Lotis Words, which reveal themselves to be in the form of runes, Alice accidentally makes her older sister disappear during a dispute over Kyô, whom Mayura had begun dating. Alice then must use the Lotis Words to try to bring her sister back from the dark. She is joined by Kyô who proves to have the Lotis powers as well, and by Frey, another Lotis master who has trained with the masters and arrives with the intention to marry Alice. Unfortunately, Mayura has been taken by the power of the Maram Words, the dark reflection of the Lotus Words. Their only hope lies in Alice and Kyô becoming the legendary Neo-Masters to discover the lost word binding both Maram and Lotis.

I’m not really a fan of Yuu Watase, well, mainly because I haven’t read or watched any of her works. I don’t really mind reading her manga either, but Alice 19th caught my attention because it’s ALICE (my all-time favourite classic story ^_^ ) and Wikipedia said that it’s the only Yuu Watase work that is Western-themed (yes, I know Fushigi Yugi and a bit of its story, but I haven’t watched or read that)

I can’t really say that I like Alice 19th as much as I like my minor favourites (shoujo excluding Cardcaptor Sakura and Gakuen Alice because those two are my major favourites; when I say minor favorites I mean La Corda d’Oro, Shugo Chara, and the likes). I’m kind of assuming that the romance in Alice 19th is Yuu Watase’s style of romance, but I can’t be sure. Well, I don’t like that style, to start with. The lotis stuffs are also not that interesting.

To be honest, I can’t think of something that I like about Alice 19th (except for the title ^_^), so up to now I haven’t done reading it… I also don’t think that I’ll be a fan of Yuu Watase…

And like what I said with Portrait of M and N, a longer review about Alice 19th will be posted soon :) .

Manga Acquisitions

I acquired a lot of manga during the month of January… most of which I haven’t read yet. Titles include: Fruits Basket (volumes 16, 19, and 21), Gakuen Alice (volumes 1-8, 12, 13), and Cardcaptor Sakura omnibus 3 (published by Dark Horse Manga). Will be posting photos, and review of the 3rd Cardcaptor Sakura Omnibus next time ^_^

========================================

I suppose that’s it for the month of February folks ^_^

Princely characters and trianglers

December 29, 2011 at 8:48 pm | Posted in AlyssaMihara's babbles, Features, Fruits Basket, Gakuen Alice, Shugo Chara! | 3 Comments
Tags: , ,

Yuki SohmaIt was just some while ago today when I finished watching the anime adaptation of Fruits Basket. I want to say more about how I liked the Furuba anime adapation (except for the last few episodes in which they changed and added lots of scenes) because of its 90% faithfulness with Natsuki Takaya’s manga, but I’ll save that particular babbling for another post.

Well anyway, like what I always do after finishing an anime series, I assessed Furuba by comparing it to other anime titles (that is somehow similar to it). Let me just get this clear though, I’m talking about Furuba anime here because that’s what I just finished. The manga will forever be the best, and I will be forever faithful with that. So anyway again, with Furuba, realization dawned upon me:

OMG DO I LIKE PRINCELY CHARACTERS??

So okay, not really realization because it’s still a question that needs an answer but we will be answering that later. LATER.

I know you might be asking why I’m so fussed about such a simple thing for liking princely characters but really… I don’t actually know if that’s bad or good… But I’m so squeeing when I think about SUCH characters. They ARE cute, aren’t they? Prince-like, as they are called. *SQUEEEEEEEEEEE*

What the hell am I talking about princes anyway and how is that connected to Furuba? Well then, here’s an answer: YUKI SOHMA.

Yuki Sohma Fruits BasketAh, the prince.

KYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!~ ♥

Yuki Sohma is just so cute right? Ha, I know he looks like a girl but I really really (2x) like him! (But I’m not out of my mind that I would join the Yuki Sohma Fan Club :) ) I so like boys who look like girls, like Ruka Nogi of Gakuen Alice and Tadase Hotori of Shugo Chara. Yuki, Ruka, Tadase… *and so goes for another kyaa~ ♥ *

And thus, the answer. I DO like princely characters. Rough translation would be, “I like boy characters who look like girls.” Hehe :) But I can’t help it, that’s my preference. Each of us has different preferences, right? So that means I’m not insane for liking such characters :D

Ruka Nogi(So maybe Ruka isn’t much like Yuki and Tadase in ‘prince-ness’, first off because he is best friends with Natsume and he was acting like some snob at the beginning of the story, but I’m still considering him because he ‘looks like a girl’.)

With what I just said on how I like Yuki, Ruka, and Tadase, you might probably be thinking that I ship Yuki-Tohru, Ruka-Mikan, and Tadase-Amu. My answer? NO, I don’t. That’s where the ‘triangler’ part goes.

You see, though I like those ‘princes’, I don’t ship them with the main heroine. I don’t know why but it’s just that I like them more than the actual boy whom I ship with the heroine. So it means “I like them but I don’t like pairing them with the heroine, obviously because the other guy is better FOR the heroine.

Tadase Hotori(I hope my explanation isn’t confusing o_O)

It doesn’t mean that I don’t like Kyo, Natsume, and Ikuto, though. I actually really like them, I mean, why would I pair them with the main heroine if I hate them? Again, it’s just that I like the prince-y character more.

So with the triangler Kyo-Tohru-Yuki (that was at the middle part of the manga because we all know that it’s Machi-Yuki – yes, I ship that — in the end), I go for Kyo-Tohru but I love Yuki more than Kyo (that doesn’t mean I don’t love Kyo!!). In Natsume-Mikan-Ruka, I ABSOLUTELY ship Natsume-Mikan but Ruka is the best guy for me. And, yes, that’s right, I pair Ikuto-Amu in Ikuto-Amu-Tadase (I was too stupid before to actually root for Tadamu. UNBELIEVABLE.), though I’ll always be a Tadase fan :)

(Agghh… I’m just tangling the explanation even more o_O)

So I think that settles it? Confusing post, I know :) . But I hope I was able to clearly state that I love the princely characters in Fruits Basket, Gakuen Alice (I see Ruka as prince :D ), and Shugo Chara, while shipping the main heroine with the ‘better’ (not for me, but for the heroine) guy ^_^

** I could say PRINCESSES instead of ‘Princes’ :) **

Yuki, Ruka, Tadase wearing girl's uniform

Aren’t the cute? ^_^ ohohohoho~

And an omake: it’s them wearing girl’s uniforms… *Kira Kira* Now that’s why you call ‘princessly princes’ :)

That’s all for this post dedicated to Princely characters. It will be 2012 in three days, and I’ll do my best to post more before the first day of 2012 ^_^ (the Furuba anime review included!)

A new love for Gakuen Alice’s Ruka Nogi

As promised, here is the Ruka Nogi post ^_^

[WARNING!! Contains spoilers! Reference up to CHAPTER 157]

Ruka 's confessionWe all know that in the Time-travel arc, Ruka finally gave up his love for Mikan, after seeing how his best friend Natsume and Mikan are destined for each other. It was a really heart-breaking scene – seeing Ruka crying… I myself actually cried with that part of the story.

Yes, I ship Natsume-Mikan, but I feel sorry for Ruka. We all know since the beginning that he isn’t ‘the one’ for Mikan. But despite that, I really like him; I actually like him better than Natsume. So now, for my favorite Ruka Nogi, we are going to list the girls that can be Ruka’s next love. I can think of three, but if you have more suggestions (you ship someone for Ruka other than these three), just leave a comment ^_^

[Listed in NO particular order]

## Aoi Hyuuga

Aoi Hyuuga

Ruka has known Aoi, Natsume’s really cute imouto, earlier than the other two girls, so she’s one step ahead of them with that. Considering Aoi as a childhood friend is already a point, and add the fact that she is ‘my best friend’s little sister’ makes another plus.

I don’t know if you agree with me that Aoi is a possible girl for Ruka, but I do find her as a likely partner for the animal pheromone alice boy. And I think Natsume will support them… if ever, that is.

But no, she’s not the one I like for Ruka.

## Sumire Shouda

Sumire ShoudaSumire a.k.a. ‘Permy’ is the president of the Natsume Ruka fan club, and she’s been a fan of the two ever since. Now that Natsume is ‘engaged’ with Mikan, Ruka is her only hope for ‘love’.

I actually like Sumire and her persistence in chasing Natsume and Ruka. And considering the thing between Natsume and Mikan, I’m half-believing that as the president of the Natsume Ruka fan club, she can be Ruka’s next love. The other half would be my shipping for Sumire and Koko.

Ok, I made a major mistake with that. It isn’t half… I guess it’s actually 10-90: 10 for Sumire-Ruka and 90 for Sumire-Koko. I’m more of a Sumire-Koko shipper ^_^

## Hotaru Imai

Hotaru ImaiAnd the last but definitely not the least in my list, Hotaru Imai, Ruka’s previous love’s best friend. She’s been Ruka’s blackmailer since that ‘Piyo’ incidence in volume 1, taking cute and ‘embarrassing’ photos of Ruka to sell. Well, who knows if Hotaru actually takes those photos so she can keep them herself? Hotaru is actually showing some signs of like towards Ruka (you remember during the New Year’s, when she ate Ruka’s own made, uh, whatever you call that new year’s food?)… Ah, she’s the most possible new love for Ruka… in MY opinion. What’s only needed is for Ruka to realize how petty Hotaru is, and how he likes her…

Just imagine, Hotaru is Mikan’s best friend, while Ruka is Natsume’s best friend…  It’s a best friend parade! ^_^

I don’t know how to explain more, so I’ll stick with:

I ship Hotaru and Ruka, and I’ve read many fanfictions with their tandem. I hope the story of the manga ends with them together…

========================================

I’m sorry if you find this feature article really confusing. It’s Christmas and I’m pretty busy with things so I just rushed this post so I can keep my promise. But if you’re a Hotaru-Ruka shipper too, you’ll understand the part with Hotaru Imai :)

In short, I just babbled about how I love the Ruka-Hotaru tandem :)

Merry Christmas everyone!
Cheers!

An English publisher for Gakuen Alice

Gakuen Alice Volume 1 by Tokyo Pop

Gakuen Alice Volume 1 by Tokyo Pop

We all know that Tokyopop is history: shutting down and leaving some unfinished manga without an English publisher. And one of the not yet finished best sellers that Tokyopop published is Gakuen Alice (though the manga is already on its final arc and will be finished in no time). Sigh… Gakuen Alice is one of my favorite manga and it’s really sad that currently, there is no English publisher that has license over the series. We fans are left with only scanlations… how are we going to have the hard copy of Gakuen Alice English-translated manga?? Tokyopop, why?? Why did you stop with only up to volume 16 of Gakuen Alice??

So for now, fans are begging the publishers to get the license for Gakuen Alice. I made a list to see what US publishers are possible to translate and publish the whole Gakuen Alice series. Take note that I used only the manga I have for publisher reference.

I’m calling the attention of these publishers to get Gakuen Alice’s licence! It’s a best seller and many would want a publisher to re-publish the first volumes and continue with volume 17 onwards ^_^

1. Dark Horse Manga

I really like Dark Horse Manga’s omnibuses (I’m still not sure if the plural for ‘omnibus’ is ‘omnibuses’. LoL :) ) because they use nice paper. It would be nice if Dark Horse will publish Gakuen Alice omnibuses because it will be cheaper compared to single-volume per book. But Gakuen Alice is still ongoing and if ever it will be finished before Dark Horse gets the license, it is still a fresh title, so there is very little possibility for omnibuses.

However, single-volume books wouldn’t be bad, as long as there is a US-publisher for Gakuen Alice. (Though I don’t like Dark Horse’s single volume books because the size isn’t the universal for manga, and the paper used isn’t that high-quality — very unlike their omnibuses)

2. Del Ray

Aah, Del Ray, the publisher of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, xxxHolic, Kitchen Princess, and some of my other favorite titles ^_^. It would be nice if Del Ray will publish Gakuen Alice because their manga have beautifully designed spines (they are really pretty to display ^_^) and front covers. Moreover, if it’s about the beauty of the manga cover or spine, I say Del Ray tops all other publishers. However, Del Ray is pretty expensive compared to other publishers. But even so, as long as they will publish Gakuen Alice, it’s fine with me, actually very fine with me :D .

3. Viz Media

The cheapest manga ^_^. I like Viz Media because their manga are cheap :) . And they are consistent with the design of the spine of the books no matter what the title, so like Del Ray, they are also nice to display (especially if you put the Viz Media books side by side). I say that Viz Media’s Shoujo Beat is my best bet for Gakuen Alice’s publisher… though it’s somehow impossible because of the fact that it IS Shoujo Beat. But I won’t lose hope! ^_^ There is still a possiblity! :)

4. Yen Press

Since Yen Press publishes few manga titles, publishing Gakuen Alice isn’t that impossible. They also publish the best seller Black Butler, so why not add another BS: Gakuen Alice? Though Yen Press manga are rare in my place, I’ll order online (like what I’m planning for Kobato :) ) if ever they will publish Gakuen Alice ^_^. It’s actually pretty nice to put Gakuen Alice and Kobato manga side by side ^_^ (my favorite manga! – plural). Though

AGAIN:

I’m calling the attention of these publishers to get Gakuen Alice’s licence! It’s a best seller and many would want a publisher to re-publish the first volumes and continue with volume 17 onwards ^_^

I’m really looking forward to a US-publisher for Gakuen Alice ^_^

Yay! Comic Odyssey never fails me ^_^

Gate 7 Volume 1.thumbnail

Gate 7 Volume 1

I never thought that I would have my own copy of CLAMP’s newest manga this early. Last Thursday (Nov. 3), I visited my favourite comic and manga store Comic Odyssey to pre-order the second Omnibus book of Cardcaptor Sakura. I was also thinking of purchasing a manga, just one, that I really love -  yes, even at a full price. I immediately looked at their ‘G’ section, and at once I saw Gakuen Alice mangas, and there’s volume 9. There was also Gentlemen’s Alliance Cross volume 7. I was caught in the middle of confusion as to what I will buy: Gakuen Alice or Gentlemen’s Alliance Cross. But literally, in the middle of those two titles, was Gate 7 volume 1. Gate 7 volume 1. Whaaaat??

Yes, I was very surprised that CLAMP’s newest manga, which was published in English just last month, is in front of me, waiting to be bought. I didn’t hesitate – that one manga I was planning to buy turned out to be Gate 7 volume 1.

(you can click the Gate 7  image above for the full-sized image)

And now I’m left with no choice but to follow Gate 7 ^_^

Synopsis (from the back of volume 1):
An innocent sightseeing trip to Kyoto opens up a magical realm to shy high schooler Chikahito Takamoto. Visiting a legendary shrine, Chikahito stumbles into the mystical world of Hana and her comrades – and his immunity to their powers leads them to believe that he’s no ordinary awkward teenager! Protecting our world from violent supernatural creatures, Hana and her team welcome the confused Chikahito – who isn’t quite sure that he wants to be caught in the middle of their war!

The Art

First, I’ll have my thoughts with the art. But be warned: Gate 7 is CLAMP so as a fangirl, my review is either positive or slightly neutral.

CLAMP’s talent is really something. Gate 7’s drawing is quite different from their recently concluded titles (Kobato, xxxHolic, and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle) – that’s a proof that the CLAMP team is able to draw something different with different titles. They aren’t limited to just one style of art.

Still, the splash pages of Gate 7 are recognizable as CLAMP-drawn. The style reminds me xxxHolic’s splash pages: elegant yet mysterious.

The different places in Kyoto are also nicely drawn. CLAMP never leaves any details ^_^

The kiss on the prologue

The Hana-Chikihito kiss on the prologue

The Hana-Chikahito kiss on the prologue

I’ve read some other Gate 7 volume 1 reviews and the thing that really caught my attention is their reaction with the Hana and Chikahito’s kiss (and it’s on the lips). CLAMP’s stories are usually sided with romance, but a kiss on the lips is rarely seen (there was a kiss in Wish but the panel was too small for a full view. Gate 7′s is in clear full view). Gate 7′s  kiss on the prologue is just so… RARE in the CLAMP universe. Though there was something in that kiss, that spell Hana cast and stuff that made Chikahito come back to the caster, or so…

Japanese History

Chikahito is a History freak. He knows a lot. And that’s one of the main points of Gate 7.

For me, CLAMP’s use of Japanese History was a success. Well, though Philippine History is one of my favorite subjects (when I was in high school and as a GE college subject), I actually suck at other countries’ history (especially Asian History – one of my worst subject when I was in high school). Yes I know the names Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga, but I don’t know exactly who they are. But with Gate 7, I became slightly knowledgeable of Japanese history. Thanks to Dark Horse’s informative translation notes ^_^ (I bet the translators had a really hard time with Gate 7…)

Speaking of translations, Dark Horse Manga is now well-loved by CLAMP fans because of their publication of a bunch of CLAMP titles. I hope they will realize that Gakuen Alice needs to be English-published too ^_^

Chikahito Takamoto = Watanuki Kimihiro ?

Chikahito Takamoto and Watanuki Kimihiro

Chikahito Takamoto and Watanuki Kimihiro

Somehow, I find Chikahito and Watanuki similar. In the beginning of the story, they were just simple high schoolers (though Watanuki already had this strange ‘loved by ghosts’ thing) but both were pushed into a world they never knew. The two were made into house helpers as compensations (but Watanuki’s case was harsher compared to Chikihito who ‘gladly’ accepted the offer). They look quite alike when they are both wearing the ‘helper outfit’. And both wear eyeglasses too ^_^

========================================

Well, what do you expect from CLAMP? All good things of course! Really, CLAMP never fails me ^_^

========================================

That review will do for now ^_^. Let’s hope that CLAMP will finish this story and Dark Horse Manga will continue publishing Gate 7 ^_^

xoxo,
