La Corda d’Oro volume 14: School festivals are so much fun!

I’m not exactly a fan of shoujo manga series that focuses only on romance, but La Corda d’Oro is one exemption to that preference. Up to now, I’m not sure why I really love this manga. I have been thinking what made me attracted to this manga that I listed it under my ‘minor favorites’. I’m not a fan of Hino Kahoko, the heroine. So maybe it’s because the story has many bishounens you can fangirl about (READ: Kazuki Hihara). Or perhaps I just find it cool that the heroine has so many guys wooing her. But oh well, I guess I’ll just go straight to the review of my most favorite volume (so far)…
Even before volume 14 was released last year, I have already told myself that I am so going have this volume because it has Kazuki Hihara on the cover (how much do I love Kazuki? read here). Although Kazuki looks out of character in the cover (which, the manga-ka, Yuki Kure, herself mentioned in the book), I find it as a cool break from his always smiling face. I’m definitely not a Kazuki-Kaho shipper, but IT HAS KAZUKI HIHARA ON THE COVER so I won’t complain.
[INCOMING SPOILERS!]
Volume 14 was all about the two most awaited and fun school festivals: Sports Festival and Cultural Festival (I love these events too when I was in high school ^_^ A break from all the
studying! Fun time with friends! Oh yeah!). I know, I know, ‘school festival’ arc is already a cliche of school drama manga series, but more often than not, school festival arcs are my favorites. I’m glad that La Corda d’Oro didn’t fail me; most of the ‘must haves’ of school festivals were included.
The volume started with Measure 59, the sports festival chapter. The first part was all sports fest comedy: Kahoko cheering Aoi, boosting his will and energy, Kahoko’s stone throwing fight with an Azuma Yunoki fangirl (forgot her name…), and the most humorous in the chapter, Keiichi doing really good in the chicken fight (hahaha! made me laugh hard! I mean, Keiichi? Doing good in the sports festival? Surprising…).
The chapter progressed from comedy to romance when the accidentally injured Kahoko visited the clinic. Well, call it fate, or coincidence or whatever because the nurse was out, and there in the clinic was Ryotaro. Ryotaro, of course, being a gentleman, tended Kahoko’s injury much to her shyness. I find that scene too cheesy but nevertheless it provided a stage of attention to Ryotaro. He was able to hint that he wants to tell ‘something’ to Kahoko, but he decided that it can wait until after the music contest (the contest that the two of them are joining).
Immediately after Measure 59 is the Sports festival special edition, with trumpet major Kazuki Hihara on the spot light (oh yeah!). I don’t really want to comment about this special chapter; my words are definitely going to be too biased because it was full of Kazuki Hihara. But anyway, it was fun to see Kazuki, Ryotaro, and Aoi to be getting along so well, despite the fact that each of them are very aware of each other’s feelings for Kahoko. I think it is better that rivals in love are friendly towards each other.
Nothing big happened in Measure 60, though I think I can consider the confrontation talk between Ryotaro and Len as something major. That dialogue made me look at the worse side of Len… I didn’t really find it cute that Len asked Ryotaro what he loves about Kahoko, as if it was nothing. Len is too dense for a male character; I can’t believe that he has the slightest of idea of Ryotaro’s feelings for Kahoko. And I won’t take his ‘too focused in music’ excuse — it isn’t enough for be a rich boy to be ignorant of others’ feelings.
Moving on… Measure 61 marks the start of the school festival (/cultural festival). I think it’s the ‘Aoi Chapter’ in volume 14. Kahoko had forced Aoi to play Romeo and Juliet on the viola. What’s more, she asked her to lead them (music competition students) in playing the piece on front of the study body. Well, what do you expect; Of course, the music competition students (READ: Kazuki Hihara) were surprised after knowing that General Education student Aoi Kaji knows how to play an instrument, so they insisted him. They played Romeo and Juliet, but ended with terrible results, as it was only an impromptu show. But nevertheless, I find it very true that even the music students, with the exception of Keiichi and Yunoki, make major mistakes during impromptu presentations (the looks on their faces were really funny when they made the mistakes
)
After the failure presentation, as Kahoko, Aoi, and Ryotaro have decided to get snacks, the after-school-festival-dance topic came up. Ryotaro said he can’t dance so he isn’t going. Kahoko said she had completely forgotten the dance event, and she doesn’t have a date (like her last year). And so, Aoi, very straightforward as always, asked Kahoko to go with him to the dance (despite the fact that, as Ryotaro mentioned in his mind, half the female population of the school asked Aoi to the dance). With his sweet tongue saying, “It’s my first school festival in Seisou… I want to make it a night to remember,” Kahoko accepted. I felt that the ‘un-romantic’ Ryotaro was thinking “I should have asked her to the date beforehand!”, but he’s too slow (and I think he has no intention of inviting Kahoko, anyway). Well, way to go, Aoi; that’s what you get when you are straightforward and aren’t afraid of being ashamed in front of a girl. Ryotaro, take notes.
There was another special chapter after measure 61, which was all about the individual class’ booths during the school festival. The booths were introduced when Kahoko, Len, Ryotaro, and Aoi, went to check out the festival. I see this special chapter as a comic relief break; take the Butler Cafe (Kazuki and Azuma as butlers) and the Horror House (with Keiichi as a ghost) and you’ll know what I mean
.
The last chapter of volume 14, Measure 62, is all about the last events of Seisou Academy’s school festival: the concert and the dance. The contestants of the music competition played a piece together in the concert. Though Kahoko was very nervous, she did her best because it might be the last that they [music competition contestants] will be playing together. Len had a solo performance; he played Scherzo Tarantella, the piece he wasn’t able to play during the second selection. It was expected of Len, performing a piece that is hard play. But his second piece surprised the students and the teachers (and I know will be surprised too if I were a Seisou
student watching the concert), because he played Ave Maria, which was a piece that isn’t as flashy and fast-paced as his previous performances. Many noted that there was something different in Len when he was playing Ave Maria. I guess even I was moved by his performance (though it is manga, no actual music you can hear), because Ave Maria was the piece Kahoko played during the fourth selection of the music contest; meaning he is finally realizing his feelings for Kahoko, bit by bit… Well, to summarize, I developed a soft spot for Len, thanks to that performance. (And he looks so handsome while he was playing
)
After the concert was the dance party. It was another comedy break, as the boys take turns to dance with Kahoko. Keiichi, expressionless as usual, took Kahoko’s hands right after the announcement of the start of the dance, but of course, Aoi as Kahoko’s date, immediately took Kahoko away from the dumbfounded Keiichi. But just as Aoi and Kahoko were getting used with the dancing, a blushing Kazuki Hihara came and asked Kahoko to dance with him. Aoi was like, “You can’t butt in on us, Kazuki!!” Oh well. (But I really want to smack Ryotaro in the face for not wanting to dance with Kahoko. Oh come on, Ryotaro! Show some romantic side!)
The dancing didn’t end with the dance party, as Kahoko who was supposed to be practicing, met Azuma in the rooftop. I guess it is Azuma’s stage in volume 14; it turned out that he was Kahoko’s last dance (well, I know that this isn’t a prom night but never mind). He even gave Kahoko a little kiss on the forehead, which enraged (I don’t know if ‘enrage’ is the right term…) her a bit.
Volume 14 ended with Kahoko and Azuma’s dance. It’s not much of cliff hanger, but of course, a reader will want to know what will happen next, right?
(Oh I forgot, there was also a Special Chapter after Measure 62. But it was only about Kanazawa and Kira’s high school days so I’m not writing about it)
To summarize, nothing major really happened in volume 14; but it was fun to read because of the fun high school events associated with comedy scenes. But the greatest thing in the fourteenth volume is that the boys get to have their own respective spot lights.
I’ll have my summary/review of La Corda d’Oro Volume 15 next ^_^
Extending my La Corda d’Oro obsession
May 25, 2011 at 11:21 am | Posted in AlyssaMihara's babbles, Anime/Manga Impressions, La Corda d'Oro | 3 CommentsTags: la corda d'oro
Remember my post about my watching of La Corda d’Oro? Yes, that’s right, I’ve just watched it recently (I saw secondo passo two days after this post), but I’m already addicted with the musical series.
Canon in D
My obsession with La Corda d’Oro brought me to hold the keyboard (or piano, for a classier effect) once again and learn Canon in D, the piece Hino Kahoko performed during the second selection of the concours. For me, it was Kahoko’s best performance; proof is that she got second place with Canon in D.
To be honest, I’ve tried playing Canon in D even before I watched La Corda d’Oro – my music-geek friends already know how to play it (I think I heard them play last year), and I heard the piece once again in the movie My Sassy Girl (though it’s Canon in C, not D). But I never had the patience to practice it, moreover, LEARN it (at least I learned what keys are to hit using the fingers on my left hand – they call it base chords – Canon’s base is just repeated again and again through the whole music).
Well anyway, La Corda d’Oro, especially Kahoko’s performance, pushed me to learn playing Canon in D, and really, thanks to the series, I’m currently three-fourths through the entire piece.
So I guess we can say that La Corda d’Oro became my inspiration ^_^

More of the manga
Lots of ranting ahead. You’ve been warned. Don’t read if you are a Len Tsukimori rooter. Heh. ^_^. But I know you’ll read anyway. Go on.
Oh, I said that I don’t like the manga’s ending?
Yeah, I still don’t like it. But I don’t know why I can’t stop myself to read the middle part of the manga!
It’s clearly obvious that the manga is biased. Everything is, ‘Len. Tsukimori. Tsukimori-kun.’ What about the other five? It’s as if Yuki Kure followed Len Tsukimori’s story in the game (though I haven’t played it yet. It’s in Japanese. Just proof how unfair the world is. Why don’t they translate games for girls, if they have lots of time translating shounen games??) [I’m too hot-headed. Sorry. Teehee ^_^]
Plus, the drawing isn’t much. The anime’s graphics is beautiful, but why isn’t the manga in the same level as the anime? I don’t know if I’m just used to CLAMP’s beautiful art that’s in both the manga and anime or what… all I know is that… I should stop comparing manga-kas!
Still, there is something in Yuki Kure’s drawing that twitches my head. Time to time, there are character illustrations that have no eye, or eyes. I don’t know if Yuki Kure is just saving ink or it’s just her style of drawing… either way, even though it’s not much to other readers, I’m not comfortable with it.
I have lots of complaints, but I read the manga anyway. I even want to buy a manga volume of La Corda d’Oro ^_^.
Now about that ‘I hate Len Tsukimori’ thing… I DO NOT hate Len. To me, he is the most handsome in the anime. He’s really cool, especially with the violin (what do you expect with a son of two well-known musicians? ^_^). The only thing that pisses me off is that Kahoko ended up with him – we all know that my ideal ending is Kahoko will not choose any of them. But end is end, I can’t do anything about that (boohoo!). Kahoko and Len looks good together anyway (well, all six of them will each look good if paired with Kahoko. Talk about really cool and hot bishounes. ^_^).
Of course, even though I said lots of good things about Len, none can change the fact that Kazuki Hihara is my favorite among them, and he’s the perfect one for ME. (LoL! ^_^)
Why is it that I love La Corda d’Oro that much?
========================================
See why I really like Kazuki Hihara? He always smiles!! ^_^ He’s really cute!
Read the Hihara Special on La Corda d’Oro manga: Vol. 14, chapter 59.5 Hihara Special.
It’s a special chapter that’s full of Hihara. Kazuki. Hihara Kazuki. Kazuki Hihara. And more Kazuki Hihara!! (LoL!)
La Corda d’Oro ~Primo Passo~ + Simple Review
May 17, 2011 at 11:53 am | Posted in Anime/Manga Impressions, Anime/Manga Titles, La Corda d'Oro, Reviews | 7 CommentsTags: la corda d'oro
It’s been official that I can watch an anime with 24/25/26 episodes in three days. Remember my blog post about watching La Corda d’Oro ~Primo Passo~? I just finished watching it two days ago… and I was craving for more… until, I realized that I’d better be contented with the ending of season one.
–Spoilers Alert!–
–The following text is purely my OPINION. PEACE, everyone, okay?
–
Classical Music
Nothing is better with La Corda d’Oro anime when it comes to classical music. The quality of music is the best, and recently, my music player’s been playing classical music from La Corda (Canon in D is my favorite ^_^ naw, I’m currently practicing it in the piano again — and honestly and always, it’s very difficult for me).
You’ll also learn a lot of music, with their ‘Lili’s One-Point Classic’ at the end of every episode. And with my little background with music, I tried to answer some of Lili’s question ^_^
Violin Romance
Here goes the story…
Honestly, La Corda is the first anime I watched because of the simple reason, ‘the anime has lots of bishounens!’. (I know, I know, I’m being too much of a fan girl
). Naturally, the story would be about romance.
Now I know all of us here know that there are five bishounens in season one, all of whom likes Hino Kahoko. When it comes to ‘who will end up with Kahoko,’ then my answer would definitely be NONE.
Len Tsukimori, Ryotarou Tsuchiura, Kazuki Hihara, Azuma Yunoki, Keiichi Shimizu — you can have any of them when you play Kin Iro Corda (PC, PS), the original of La Corda. For me, the anime adaptation shouldn’t have any guy that would end up with Kahoko because that would be bias if one of them was chosen.
The anime did it’s best — the season one ended with Kahoko loving her violin (Kahoko and her violin pairing! mwahahahaha ^_^), with her not choosing any of the five. Though I very much love Kazuki Hihara, the ending was ‘all for the best’.
Naw, my problem is, what would season 2 be? If I didn’t like it, I would stick with season 1′s ending. Plainly said, my ideal ending would be, ‘Kahoko continued her love for music and her violin. THE END.’
The Manga
For a bit of twist, I decided to read the manga. And I regret reading it. I didn’t like the ending. Yuki Kure is so biased (sorry! it’s my OPINION).
Well, my first impression with La Corda is the main pairing is KahoLen. But as I watched the anime, it came to me that all of the five can be paired with Kahoko. And again, the ideal ending would be none of them ended up with her.
All I can say with the manga is that, the manga-ka chose one of the characters. It’s very unfair. Not everyone likes that character for Kahoko, right? And to add insult to injury, the original of La Corda is a game, therfore, there are different story paths for different persons. The manga-ka should have stick with my ideal ending ^_^ (but I can’t do anything about that ending anyway).
For those planning to read the manga, I say that if you aren’t a Kahoko heart Len rooter, then it would be better to be contented with the anime’s Primo Passo ending.
=======================
So I guess that’s all ^_^. Better be contented with La Corda d’Oro ~Primo Passo’s~ ending ^_^
Irashai! La Corda d’Oro ver.

I asked the La Corda d’Oro bishounens to welcome blog guests for the time being ^_^
(I remember reading something like “I love La Corda d’Oro because it has lots of cool guys!” from a blog. I can’t agree enough ^_^)
Watching La Corda d’Oro

Yipee!
Now I know that my first choice of anime to watch is Romeo x Juliet, but since it’s not available in our town’s DVD store, I decided to watch my second choice — La Corda d’Oro ~Primo Passo~
The first time I watched the opening of this anime, I was like, “OMG, I need to watch this!! All the boy protagonists are handsome in their own ways!” And yeah, I mean it, ALL of them. Though of course, I personally like Hihara Kazuki, I think that was love at first sight (LoL!), when I first saw him in the opening, I knew for sure that he’s the one for me in this anime
I guess I’ll post my review after I watch this anime. But one thing is for sure: I love this series!
Kahoko Hino is a student in the General Education section of Seiso Academy. One day she runs into Lili, a musical fairy, who grants her a magical violin and a place in the school’s annual musical competition. Kahoko refuses, only to be pressed on by Lili until she accepts the instrument and place in the competition. As she practices, Kahoko is amazed that she can play any musical piece as long as she knows the tune and plays it with her heart. As the competition goes on, she becomes more and more attached to the people she is trying to compete with.
Well of course, here’s my Kazuki Hihara ^_^:
Since, I think, the anime is not finished, I’ll have to go for the manga after watching Primo and Secondo Passo. *sigh* I need to save more so I can get the manga I want ^_^. And by the way, I want to play the game too! Hope I can see a La Corda PSP game ^_^
Now watching La Corda d’Oro ~Primo Passo~!
